Rachel Carson

2022

72 x 60”, mixed media including photograph and 7,000+ porcelain sunflower seeds

Rachel Carson was a biologist, author and conservationist, and her life's work led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Agency. Porcelain sunflower seeds from WeiWei's original sculpture installation at the Tate Modern, float like a murmuration, forming the portrait of Carson. The seeds reflect her interest in nature, and science. She wrote a pivotal book, titled Silent Spring, the complete text of which is printed as the background to this work in very small type.
