Alice Paul
2021
Size: 72” x 60”, mixed media including photograph printed on plastic and 6,000+ hand-painted thimbles
Founder of the National Women's Party, Alice Paul was a suffragist and women's rights activist. She first introduced the Equal Rights Amendment and fought tirelessly for its passage the rest of her life. More than 7,000 thimbles, hand-painted, fifteen shades of gray, create this portrait. The background is a photograph of the tri-color flag of the National Women's Suffrage Congressional Union. Etched into the plexiglass substrate is the text of the Equal Rights Amendment and the 19th Amendment.
