Sitting Bull
2018
44-1/2 x 44-1/2”, mixed media including photograph and 10,600 map pins
Sitting Bull's battles were fought for his peoples' rights, and land, against the encroachment of the US government. This portrait is constructed using more than 10,000 black map pins, overlaid on a reproduction of the 1851 Treaty map of Sioux territory in North Dakota. The hashtags represent actions against the Dakota Access Pipeline, and reflect the ongoing fight for Indian territory. The flash point for recent protests is indicated by a red light on the map at Standing Rock.
